If you’ve never met with a therapist online, a little uncertainty is completely normal. The good news: telehealth is simple, secure, and — for many people — just as effective as meeting in person. Here’s what your first session will look like, and how to set yourself up to get the most from it.
How Online Therapy Works
You’ll meet your therapist over a private, secure video connection from wherever you feel comfortable — usually a quiet room at home. Before your appointment, we’ll send a link and any forms to complete. When it’s time, you simply click to join. No special software or technical skill is required.
How to Prepare
- Find a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted. Headphones can help you focus and keep the conversation confidential.
- Test your technology a few minutes early — camera, microphone, and a stable internet connection. Plug in or charge your device.
- Have what you need nearby — water, tissues, a notebook, and anything that helps you feel at ease.
- Jot down a few notes about what’s been on your mind, so you remember what you’d like to talk about.
What Happens in the First Session
The first appointment is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your history, and your goals — and you’re welcome to ask questions too. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to. Together, you’ll begin shaping a plan that feels right for you.
Is It as Effective as In-Person Care?
For many concerns — including anxiety, depression, and stress — research shows telehealth therapy can be just as effective as meeting face to face. It also removes common barriers like travel, time off work, and finding childcare, making it easier to keep care a consistent part of your life.
